Cytotoxicity

Cytotoxicity tests are conducted by following ISO 10993-5 standard. In general, testing articles are extracted in a cell growth media at predetermined conditions. A sub-confluent monolayer of mammalian cells is exposed to the extract medium and incubated for a specific amount of time at 37 ºC. Following incubation, the morphology of cells is examined by using an optic microscope. The viability of cells is determined quantitively and a reduction of viability by more than 30% is considered a cytotoxic effect. Cytotoxicity is an important indicator for toxicity evaluation of medical devices and biomaterials.
